Facts about Steel

Steel is a metal alloy whose major component is iron, with a carbon content between 0.02% and 1.7% by weight. There are many other alloying elements that may be used. Carbon is the most cost effective material.

The earliest evidence of steel making is an area in Sri Lanka where thousands of sites were found. These early furnaces which date from 300 B.C. were powered by Monsoon winds.

Look out for cutlery that is 18/10 stainless steel. The steel is 18% chromium and 10% nickel.
